Ecological Aspects

Flax, naturally ecological

Linen scores very highly on ecological factors. Flax is a natural product that does not require irrigation during growth, and needs little or no chemical treatment. All parts of the plant are used, so there is no waste. Linen fabric is 100% biodegradable and recyclable.

The environmental impact of spinning and weaving flax is virtually zero. Libeco also invests systematically in new techniques and production methods to reduce the consumption of energy and raw materials even further.

Libeco only selects partners that meet their high ecological standards for finishing of its linen products. Biological waste water purification, use of water-based dyes and oxygen-based bleaches are minimum requirements. The selected dyes are fully compliant with the European REACH standard.

The Libeco collections listed below highlight these ecological qualities.

Libeco Organic

This collection achieves the highest ecological standards of all: the flax for this collection is grown in an entirely organic way. Spinning, weaving and finishing of the linen is done using the most ecological and socially responsible methods, as confirmed by the GOTS certification that covers the entire production process. For more information, see the "organic linen" tab.

Eco Linen collection

The Eco Linen collection consists of a series of flax-colored fabrics. "Flax" is a unique color created by the natural interplay of sun, rain and earth during the retting process. As a result, these textiles are not dyed and therefore contain no chemical residues. Eco Linen is a worldwide registered quality mark, and this collection is also fully certified by Oeko-Tex..

Oeko-Tex collection

All Libeco fabrics are compliant with the Oeko-Tex 100 standard, and some are also certified. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 quality label is the best-known and most common quality certificate for independently tested textiles found to be free of harmful substances.
